BEHIND THE INK

Meet Gabriel

My name is Gabriel Varelas, and I'm an award-winning tattoo artist located in Phoenix, Arizona. Born and raised here, my love for tattooing runs deep with a foundation based in art. I've been a painter my whole life. Before tattooing, I spent years working in different mediums—selling canvases at local art events, painting commissioned shoes, working on murals—anything I could do to progress in my craft.

I've been in the tattoo industry since 2017 and tattooing since 2019. The journey to becoming an artist was a long road for me, but the lifelong dedication I've given to my art has pushed me forward to excel in my career. Today, I'm proud to be well-rounded in multiple tattoo styles. Anytime I master something new in my craft, I'm motivated to tackle the next challenge along the way!

In my free time, I enjoy hanging out with my two cats, spending time with my family, playing video games, and traveling.

REVIEWS

FROM OUR CLIENTS

  • Where are you located?
I work out of Phoenix, AZ! All my travel dates and locations are typically posted on my Instagram, but feel free to drop a suggestion on where you want to see me next!
  • How much is a deposit?
I ask for a $200 non-refundable deposit to set an appointment! Deposits can be transferred to a new date as long as I am notified at least 72 hours before your scheduled appointment. A new deposit will be required if less than 72 hours notice is given or if more than 1 reschedule is needed.
  • How much does a tattoo cost?
The cost of a tattoo varies based on several factors, including the design's complexity, the location on your body, the size of the tattoo, and the amount of detail involved. For an accurate quote, we recommend scheduling a consultation with me. During this session, I will discuss your design ideas, placement, and size to provide you with a detailed pricing estimate. My priority is to ensure you receive a high-quality tattoo that meets your vision and budget.
  • Do you do in-person consultations?
I do all my consultations through my website or DMs on instagram! I prefer to have all the information for your piece written down so I can easily refer back to it during the design process and we are both clear on our ideas. If we have completed a consultation through one of these forms and further discussion is needed before we book, then we may set up an in-person consultation from there.
  • When will I see my design?
All designs are done early the week of your scheduled appointment. I will send a message to check in with you, usually Monday the week of your appointment. Once I get a confirmation, I’ll start working on your design from there! Designs are sent out at least a day in advance. All of the work I do is custom made for each client, so please make sure to be as thorough as possible when submitting your booking form as this will help me streamline the designing process and know clearly what you’re looking for!
  • Can I bring a guest to my appointment?
You are welcome to bring one guest with you to your appointment! We ask that you limit one guest per client so the shop doesn’t get too crowded during busy times.
  • Do you allow numbing cream?
On rare occasions, I will allow clients to use my preferred brand of numbing cream, however, this is on a case by case basis. I only allow numbing cream for certain locations and under certain conditions, so if numbing cream is something you’re interested in, please indicate that in your booking form and we can discuss the possibilities during the consultation process. *PLEASE NOTE* if you show up to your appointment with numbing cream on, without any prior discussion or against artist suggestion, your appointment can and will be cancelled, and your deposit forfeited. Numbing cream can be harmful to the healing of your tattoo and to your body in general! I will not risk your safety with a product I do not trust.
  • Do you charge more for color?
No! My pricing for full color work is the same, however the time commitment can vary greatly based on style. On average a full color project will take twice the amount of time as a black and grey project.
  • Do you do coverups or reworks?
Typically yes! It will depend on the piece you already have and how open you are to options for your coverup, but I’m always open to check out your piece and talk ideas. You can check out my portfolio to see some examples of coverups and reworks I’ve done in the past.
  • How much for a full sleeve?
Every sleeve is different! Multiple factors go into determining the timing for each individual sleeve including size, location, subject matter, style, pain tolerance, skin health, etc. Once we’ve discussed your ideas, typically I’ll break down your sleeve into 4 quarter sleeve sections for designing, and give you a rough time estimate on the first section of the sleeve. Ultimately, any large scale project will take multiple days to complete, so while the time commitment can be large, the outcome of a completed, cohesive sleeve is always worth the effort!
  • Do you charge for touchups?
I touchup all of my work for free within the first year of receiving your piece! Pricing can vary based on what is needed past the year marker, but every piece is different! Fill out my "Touch-Up/Continuing Piece" form with photos of your healed piece and I can accurately quote you for any touchups needed!
  • What is the recommended aftercare for a tattoo?
I emphasize the importance of proper aftercare to ensure your new tattoo heals beautifully and lasts a lifetime. Here’s a comprehensive guide to follow: 1. Initial Care (First 24 hours): - Leave the bandage applied by your tattoo artist on for at least 2-4 hours. This protects your fresh tattoo from bacteria and prevents friction. - After removing the bandage, gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap. Pat the area dry with a clean towel. 2. Ongoing Care (Next 2-4 weeks): - Apply a thin layer of unscented tattoo aftercare ointment, such as Aquaphor or a product recommended by your artist, 2-3 times daily. - Continue washing your tattoo gently twice a day, always ensuring your hands are clean. - Avoid submerging the tattoo in water. Showers are fine, but steer clear of baths, hot tubs, pools, and direct water streams on the tattoo. 3. Avoid: - Direct sunlight and tanning beds. If you must be in the sun, cover the tattoo or apply a high SPF sunscreen after it has healed. - Picking or scratching at scabs or peeling skin, which can cause infection or impact the ink. 4. General Advice: - Wear loose clothing over the tattoo to avoid irritation. - Stay hydrated and maintain a healthy diet to support skin healing. By following these guidelines, you help ensure your tattoo heals properly and remains vibrant. If you have any specific concerns or questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I'm here to assist you through every step of your tattoo journey.
  • What forms of payment do you accept?
For deposits, I take CashApp or Zelle. The remainder is due the day of your appointment, I accept cash, CashApp, Zelle, and card! Please be aware the card reader does charge a percentage based fee.
